We are looking for students’ ideas on important current issues that will be debated at the NATO Summit in Chicago in May, including partnerships with Arab Spring countries, spending more efficiently on defense, and building transatlantic values and community. I would like to encourage your students at Roma Tre University to participate.

Winners will present their policy ideas at our conference in Berlin and receive feedback from NATO (round-trip airfare and 4 nights’ accommodation plus 500 EUR cash prize included). Students will also have a chance to collaborate with their peers in other NATO Member and Partner countries to come up with common solutions to these important transatlantic issues.

The deadline for submissions in the first category is February 23. You can find all the details here: http://www.atlantic-community.org/index/articles/view/Your_Ideas%2C_Your_NATO

Articles must be written in English, but we will be judging all submissions based on ideas and content, and will help edit and improve writing. Even if students have little or no experience writing in English, if they have great policy ideas, we want to hear from them!

I would be grateful if you could forward this email to your students. If you have any questions about the competition, atlantic-community.org, or our mission to empower young people in the transatlantic policy debate, please do not hesitate to contact us at staff@atlantic-community.org

The continued proliferation of nuclear weapons is one of the most pressing security issues of our time, yet the empirically-based study of international nuclear history remains in its infancy! NPIHP’s Nuclear Boot Camp is an intensive, ten-day immersion in the history of nuclear matters ranging from the evolution of nuclear technology to the origins and development of deterrence theory and nuclear strategy through the historical roots of today’s global nuclear landscape.

NPIHP is pleased to announce the first edition of its new Working Paper series: The Elephant in the Room: The Soviet Union and India’s Nuclear Program, 1967-1989 by Balazs Szalontai.

Drawing upon extensive research in Hungarian archives, Szalontai maps the evolution of the Soviet Union’s attitude towards India’s nuclear program from 1967 through 1989. He concludes that in the time period between the negotiations for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in 1967 through the end of the Cold War in 1989, Soviet policy vacillated between disapproval (during the NPT negotiations), silence (in the aftermath of India’s May 1974 nuclear test), and gradually increasing technical support for India’s civilian nuclear program (from 1976 onward). Further, these changes were motivated more by specific Soviet strategic objectives than by any general principles of non-proliferation policy.

Balazs Szalontai is a Research Fellow and Visiting Professor at ECNU’s Center for Cold War International History Studies. Having received a Ph.D. in Soviet and Korean history, he has done archival research on the modern history of North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Mongolia, the Soviet Union, and Eastern Europe. His publications include Kim Il Sung in the Khrushchev Era: Soviet-DPRK Relations and the Roots of North Korean Despotism, 1953-1964 (Stanford University Press and Woodrow Wilson Center Press, 2005), and book chapters on North Korean and Southeast Asian economic and cultural policies. His current research projects are focused on the Korean War, Indochinese-ASEAN relations, North Korea’s involvement in the Vietnam War, and DPRK-Middle Eastern relations. He can be reached at aoverl@yahoo.co.uk.
